Getting Around Melbourne

Melbourne offers one of Australia’s best public transport systems, making it easy and affordable to explore the city while you study at BlueBird Institute. Here’s everything you need to know about navigating Melbourne like a local.

🚋 Trams

Melbourne’s iconic tram network is the most extensive in the world. The Free Tram Zone covers the entire CBD – just hop on and off without tapping your Myki card. For trips outside this zone, you’ll need a valid Myki card.

🚇 Trains

Metro trains connect Melbourne’s suburbs to the city centre. Key student routes include:

  • Sandringham Line (near St Kilda beaches)
  • Craigieburn Line (affordable housing suburbs)
  • Werribee Line (western suburbs)

Buses fill gaps where trams/trains don’t reach, especially useful for:

  • Late-night travel (Night Network buses)
  • Reaching campuses in outer suburbs

Melbourne has 135km+ of bike lanes. Options include:

  • Melbourne Bike Share ($9 daily unlimited rides)
  • Second-hand bikes from Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace
